HDB will construct its 1 millionth flat this year
Congratulations HDB!
HDB is celebrating its 50th anniversary and they will be building their 1 millionth flat this year.
What role will they have now that 'the entire population has been housed?'
According to PM Lee, expectations of Singaporeans have changed, so HDB will be committed to providing high quality housing.
He said that the government will also be committed to keeping HDB price affordable, but on the more touchy issue of high HDB resale prices, he had this to say:
“These resale prices are set by individual households who transact flats on a willing-buyer, willing-seller basis, and are affected by movements and sentiments in the wider economy, including in the private property market. Hence, resale prices of HDB flats will fluctuate from year-to-year. But over the long term, the value of HDB flats depends on the strength of the Singapore economy."
Pining the value of resale HDB flats to the Singapore economy seems like a no-brainer to me, at the end of the day this doesn't really tell me much - looks like its going to be a wait-and-see attitude at the moment.
But that aside, it's kudos to HDB. Regardless of what others may say, HDB has managed to house Singapore - over 85% of us. Which is an amazing feat if you compare it to most public housing projects around the world.
So from the ancient Queenstown estate to the spanking Dawson BTOs - well done HDB, well done.
